SUMMARY:Female Figures: Light\, Sound\, Word
DESCRIPTION:An Evening of Music and Storytelling Dedicated to Women\nDryades Quartet \nWoman as an enduring symbol—and women who have themselves become symbols—are brought to life through their writings and correspondence. From the Virgin Mary\, the Mother of All\, and the ancient Muse Calliope\, to Sappho\, Clara Schumann\, and more recent figures such as Elder Gavrilia\, Maria Callas\, Anna Sikelianou\, and Leto Katakouzenou\, their voices emerge through letters\, memoirs\, and literary texts. \nAs always\, it is music that binds these narratives together. The maiden is adorned as a bride\, celebrating the joys of a spiritual union through Ravel’s Greek-inspired melodies; she is transformed into the Muse of Poets\, inspiring Lord Byron and Gounod; she appears as a leader\, as a priestess of the Moon\, and as the high priestess of Bellini’s bel canto; she bridges earth and heaven and reveals her divine nature through the music of Erik Satie and Kostas Giannidis\, embodying love\, compassion\, and the nurturing spirit of humanity. \nIn the Dryades Quartet\, the harp—evoking the lyre of the god Apollo—joins the flute\, associated with the god Pan\, the viola\, representative of the most emblematic family of Western string instruments\, and the human voice\, which unifies the musical tapestry. Together they perform works by European composers inspired by Greek tradition and mythology\, including Ravel\, Debussy\, and Fauré\, alongside contemporary compositions by Greek composers. \nCredits \n\nSoprano: Katia Paschou\nFlute: Melina Makri\nViola: Krystalia Gaitanou\nHarp: Evangelia Kiosoglou

SUMMARY:A Midsummer Afternoon's Dream
DESCRIPTION:Yannis Ritsos – Thodoris Lempesis \nA Midsummer Afternoon’s Dream (1938) by Yannis Ritsos is a poetic tribute to youth—to the years of innocence\, joy\, and freedom. It was written during the period from 1937 to 1943\, often regarded as one of the poet’s most prolific and lyrically inspired creative phases. \nIn his second major musical composition\, following Moonlight Sonata\, composer Thodoris Lempesis explores\, through a dialogue between music and the spoken word\, a world of images\, childhood memories\, places\, moments\, sounds\, and the passage of time. The result is a compelling artistic conversation between poetry and music. \nAudiences will experience Ritsos’s richly evocative poem through the narration of acclaimed actress Panagiota Vlanti. Presented as a staged concert reading that blends music and spoken word\, the performance invites listeners to become part of the “dream” and journey back to the carefree summers of childhood\, suspended in the timeless light of a midsummer afternoon. \nCredits \n\nPoem: Yannis Ritsos\nActress & Narrator: Panagiota Vlanti\nMusic Composition: Thodoris Lempesis\nAccompanied by: Chamber Orchestra

SUMMARY:From Operetta to the Athenian and Ionian Serenade
DESCRIPTION:The kantada is a musical bridge between Greece and Italy\, between the passion of song and the sweetness of heartfelt confession. \nOriginating in the Ionian Islands and nineteenth-century Athens\, these serenades have echoed through the years as reminders of a romantic era\, when voices and melodies united hearts beneath balconies and along whitewashed alleyways. Their music is imbued with the fragrance of jasmine\, the sea\, and Mediterranean light\, as guitars and mandolins intertwine with the human voice in songs celebrating love\, nature\, and the joy of life. \nInfluenced by Western European musical traditions\, the kantades became both precursors and companions of Greek operetta\, where song evolved into theatre and emotion found expression on stage. Composers such as Dionysios Lavrangas\, Lambiris\, and Kokkinos\, together with poets including Dionysios Solomos\, gave shape and spirit to a genre that masterfully combines classical refinement with popular sensibility. \nThrough George Ziakas’s new orchestral arrangements\, these beloved serenades come to life once again—not merely as nostalgic memories\, but as an invitation to a musical journey of the soul\, far removed from the pace of modern life\, where music speaks its truest language: the language of love and dreams. \nCredits \n\nSoprano: Mina Polychronou\nTenor: Andreas Karaoulis\n“Nikos Skalkottas” Conservatory Choir\nMusic Director & Arrangements: George Ziakas\nAccompanied by: Plucked String Orchestra

SUMMARY:From Baroque to Neoclassicism
DESCRIPTION:Dance\, Nature\, and Echoes of the Past \n \nA musical journey where time\, myth\, and movement converge on stage. \nAs part of its ongoing collaborations with leading artistic institutions across Greece\, the Mytilene Music Festival joins forces with the Athens Municipality Symphony Orchestra to present a concert entitled From Baroque to Neoclassicism. \nThe programme features Antonio Vivaldi’s iconic masterpiece The Four Seasons\, with Apollon Grammatikopoulos as violin soloist and Ioakeim Baltsavias conducting. \nThe concert is complemented by works by Christoph Willibald Gluck and Ottorino Respighi\, highlighting the evolution and enduring influence of Baroque musical aesthetics on symphonic composition from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. \nFrom the dark dramaturgy of myth to the pulse of nature and the revival of the past\, this concert unfolds across three distinct musical worlds. Gluck’s powerful Dance of the Furies opens the programme with dramatic intensity\, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons paints the ever-changing cycle of nature in sound\, while Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances bridges the Renaissance and the twentieth century through a refined modern compositional voice. \nCredits \n\nAthens Municipality Symphony Orchestra\nViolin: Apollon Grammatikopoulos\nConductor: Ioakeim Baltsavias
