“Eleni” The Trial of a Prostitute

August 24 | 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Inspired by the “Eloquence of Helen” by the sophist Gorgias, Euripides’ Helen and Homer’s Iliad, this monologue starring the Beautiful Helen comes to redress the injustices that myth and the “official” version of events have heaped upon the woman who was – as they say – the cause of the Trojan War and the suffering with which it tormented the Greeks and the Trojans for ten years. Helen unleashes a harsh accusation against everyone (from her supposed father (Tyndareus) to the real one (Zeus, who responds with thunder from the sky to her reproaches), deconstructs all the heroes of the Trojan War, defends herself with vigor and asks herself “who ultimately writes history?” Lydia Koniordou, the greatest living Greek tragedian, interprets the most charming and misunderstood mythical heroine, directed by Christos Sougaris, who returns to dramaturgy drawn from mythological and historical sources, after Euripides’ Trojan Women, which she presented at the Epidaurus Festival on behalf of the NTNG, in 2022.
