The Mytilene Photography Society is delighted to welcome photographer Antigoni Kourakou to the city of Mytilene, where she will showcase her truly impressive work.
The opening of the exhibition will take place on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 8:00 PM, at the FEM exhibition space in Kato Kastro, Mytilene, with the artist in attendance.
The exhibition will be open to the public from Monday, May 5 to Wednesday, May 7, between 7:00 and 9:00 PM, and admission is free.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“My practice is a creative process open to stimuli that emerge during the act of photographing. Inspiration may come from a specific gaze, a pose that expresses my emotions, or a detail that strikes me as beautiful and moving.”
All these elements come together to create an aesthetic reflection of my inner self — a world of my own — where thoughts, anxieties, and desires find a place and can be expressed symbolically.
Within a defined framework, the models — primarily women, often actresses, dancers, and performers — are invited to become part of this world, to play a role, and to transform.
This approach is grounded in improvisation, emphasizing spontaneous outcomes through collaboration and interaction, without being constrained by rigid guidelines.
My focus is not only on the depiction of the human form, the movements of the body, and the sculptural poses of the models, but also on natural elements and the surrounding environment.
As a result, landscapes and still life elements are integrated into my work, depicted in a less literal manner.
My main goal is to create a specific mood or atmosphere rather than provide an accurate and detailed representation of the subject. My intention is to convey a sense of the present moment beyond a literal interpretation—to capture a deeper and more subjective reality, embedded in an imaginative and symbolic framework.
I do not usually work within specific themes or structured series.
My photographs should be viewed more as “fragments” — pieces of a whole that is never fully revealed in its entirety.
